The number one question before buying a travel eSIM: does my phone support it?
Short answer: if your phone was released after 2020, it probably does. Here's the full list.
How to check instantly
Before scrolling through lists, try this:
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → if you see "Add eSIM" — you're good.
Android: Settings → Network → SIM → if you see "Add eSIM" or "Download SIM" — you're good.
If those options don't appear, your phone either doesn't support eSIM or your carrier has locked the feature.

Important notes
Carrier-locked phones: Some carriers lock the eSIM feature. If your phone is on the list but doesn't show the eSIM option, contact your carrier to unlock it.
Regional variants: Some phone models support eSIM in certain regions but not others. Chinese market versions often lack eSIM.
Dual eSIM: iPhone 13 and newer support dual eSIM (two eSIMs active simultaneously, no physical SIM needed). Earlier iPhones support one eSIM + one physical SIM.
Physical SIM + eSIM: On most phones, you can use both at the same time. Your physical SIM handles calls, the eSIM handles travel data.
My phone isn't on the list
If your phone doesn't support eSIM, you have two options:
- Buy a local SIM card at your destination
- Rent a pocket WiFi device
Both work fine — they're just less convenient than eSIM.
