The United States has some of the fastest mobile networks in the world. It also has some of the most expensive roaming charges for international visitors.
If your European carrier charges €10/GB for roaming and you're spending two weeks road-tripping through California, you're looking at a potential €150+ phone bill just for maps and Instagram.
Here's how to avoid that.
Option 1: Travel eSIM (best value)
US eSIM plans run on T-Mobile or AT&T networks. Both have excellent coverage in cities and along major highways. Rural areas and national parks can be spotty — that's true for any carrier in the US.
Typical prices:
- 5GB / 7 days: ~$10
- 10GB / 7 days: ~$28
- 10GB / 30 days: ~$30
- Unlimited / 30 days: ~$35-50
Pros: Set up before your trip, data at landing, keep your home number. Cons: Rural coverage depends on the underlying network.
Option 2: Prepaid SIM card
Buy at the airport, a T-Mobile store, or at Walmart/Target/Best Buy.
Options:
- T-Mobile Tourist Plan: $50 for 50GB / 21 days + unlimited calls
- AT&T Prepaid: $40 for 15GB / 30 days
- Mint Mobile: $15 for 5GB / 30 days (online purchase, eSIM available)
Pros: Includes a US phone number for calls, generous data. Cons: More expensive than eSIM, need to visit a store or order online.
Option 3: Free WiFi
The US has decent free WiFi at Starbucks, McDonald's, libraries, malls, and most hotels. But unlike Europe, many American cities are car-dependent, so you'll need data while driving.
Option 4: Roaming
EU carriers: your "Roam Like at Home" does NOT apply in the US. You'll pay premium roaming rates. Australian and Asian carriers are equally expensive.
USA-specific tips
You need data for Uber/Lyft. Taxis are expensive in the US. Rideshare apps require data.
National parks have no signal. Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone — download offline maps before you go.
Tipping culture means you need Google. Seriously, you'll Google "how much to tip" at least five times.
The US is huge. A road trip from LA to New York is 4,500 km. Make sure your plan has enough data for navigation.
