Internet in Hungary: Budapest, Lake Balaton and the Serbian Border (2026)

Hungary is inside EU roaming, but the Serbian border is not. How to stay online in Budapest, at Lake Balaton and on the road, and who to call for help.

Telcomia·

Budapest is one of Europe's most popular city breaks: thermal baths, the Danube embankments, ruin bars and a well-run public transport network. Beyond the capital, Lake Balaton fills up every summer, and the wine regions of Tokaj and Eger attract visitors all year. For travellers with an EU SIM, Hungary is covered by Roam Like at Home, so the phone works much as at home. Travellers arriving with a British, American or Asian SIM generally face daily roaming fees instead.

The one border to watch is in the south.

Key facts for Hungary

  • EU roaming: covered by Roam Like at Home
  • Local networks: One, Telekom, Yettel (depending on the plan)
  • Emergency numbers: 112; police 107, ambulance 104, fire 105
  • Embassies: in Budapest

The Serbian border

Seven countries border Hungary. Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Croatia and Slovenia are EU members, and Ukraine has joined the EU roaming area; Serbia is the exception. A day trip from Szeged to Subotica or Novi Sad takes you outside EU roaming, and on the southern edge of the Great Plain a phone can latch onto a Serbian mast before you even reach the border. Picking a Hungarian network manually prevents it.

Budapest: tickets, transport and the river

Budapest's public transport is run by BKK, and its official app, BudapestGO, sells tickets and shows live departures for trams, buses, the metro and the river boats. Coverage is strong across the city, including along the Danube. Many visitors also take day boats up the river to Szentendre and the Danube Bend; signal holds along most of the route.

Driving, Balaton and the countryside

If you drive on Hungarian motorways, you need an electronic vignette (e-matrica), which you can buy online or in an app before you get on the road; there is no sticker, as cameras read your number plate. Coverage around Lake Balaton is good in towns and on the main roads, and patchier in the hills of the north shore and in parts of the Great Plain.

Getting connected

EU SIM holders: nothing changes inside Hungary. The eSIM earns its place if your home tariff caps data abroad or you continue into Serbia.

Everyone else: set up the travel eSIM before leaving home. The plan's clock starts with the first Hungarian connection; your regular number still takes SMS while BudapestGO, the vignette shop and your maps use the eSIM's data.

Trains: MÁV, the national railway, sells domestic tickets in its app, including to Lake Balaton, so you can board with a ticket on your phone.

A Hungarian prepaid SIM is sold in operator shops and needs your passport to register.

Consular protection: who to call in Hungary

  • 112 answers any type of emergency.
  • 107 reaches the police, 104 an ambulance and 105 the fire service.
  • Embassies are in Budapest. The Telcomia app shows yours, with address and phone.
  • Emergency phrases in Hungarian are ready to show on screen in the app.
