Internet in Luxembourg: the City, the Castles and the Borders (2026)

Luxembourg is inside EU roaming and tiny. How to stay online in Luxembourg City, the Müllerthal and Vianden, why public transport costs nothing, and who to call.

Telcomia·

Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe: you can drive across it in about an hour, and France, Belgium and Germany are never far away. Most visitors combine the old quarters and fortifications of Luxembourg City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the castle of Vianden and the sandstone gorges of the Müllerthal. For EU SIM cards, the country is covered by Roam Like at Home; SIMs from outside the EU usually pay roaming by the day.

Key facts for Luxembourg

  • EU roaming: covered by Roam Like at Home
  • Local networks: POST, Orange, Tango (depending on the plan)
  • Emergency numbers: 112; police 113
  • Embassies: in Luxembourg City

Luxembourg City

The capital is built on cliffs above the Alzette and Pétrusse valleys. Public lifts link the upper town with the Grund and Pfaffenthal districts below, and the casemates, tunnels carved into the rock, can be visited in the warmer months. Coverage is good across the city, though it drops inside the casemates.

Public transport that costs nothing

Buses, trains and trams across Luxembourg cost nothing to ride, for residents and visitors alike; only first class on trains needs a ticket. The tram crosses the capital from the central station to the Kirchberg district, home to several EU institutions, and coverage is strong throughout the city.

Borders on every side

With France, Belgium and Germany a short drive away, phones near the borders often switch to a neighbouring network. With an EU SIM that changes nothing; with a plan for Luxembourg alone, select a Luxembourg network manually, or take a Europe plan if you will cross. The village of Schengen, where the agreement that removed checks at many of Europe's internal borders was signed, sits on the Moselle at the meeting point of the three countries.

Vianden and the Müllerthal

The Müllerthal Trail, known as Little Switzerland, winds through sandstone gorges and forest, where the signal can drop between the rocks. Vianden's hilltop castle and its chairlift make an easy day trip from the capital, and the vineyards of the Moselle valley are just as close.

Languages and paying

Luxembourgish, French and German are all official languages, and English is widely spoken. Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere.

Getting connected

EU SIM: Luxembourg counts as home for roaming. A travel eSIM is only worth it if your tariff has little data for the EU.

SIM from outside the EU: install a travel eSIM before you fly. It starts on its first connection in Luxembourg, and your usual number stays reachable for texts and bank codes.

Luxembourg prepaid SIMs from POST, Orange or Tango are sold in their shops and must be registered with an identity document.

Consular protection: who to call in Luxembourg

  • 112 for an ambulance or the fire service, and 113 for the police.
  • Embassies are in Luxembourg City. The Telcomia app shows yours, with address and phone.
  • The app has emergency phrases in French, ready to show on screen.
