Internet in Poland: Kraków, the Tatras and the Eastern Border (2026)

Poland is inside EU roaming, but its eastern border and the mountains have their own rules. How to stay online from Warsaw and Kraków to Zakopane.

Telcomia·

Poland has become one of Europe's busiest destinations, from weekend breaks in Kraków and Gdańsk to hiking in the Tatra Mountains. For visitors with an EU SIM, the connection question is mostly settled: Poland is covered by Roam Like at Home, so your plan works much as it does at home. Visitors from the United Kingdom, the United States or Asia usually pay roaming by the day.

What makes Poland different is its eastern edge, where the EU meets non-EU neighbours, and the mountains, where a phone can be a safety tool rather than a convenience.

Key facts for Poland

  • EU roaming: covered by Roam Like at Home
  • Local networks: Orange, Play, Plus (depending on the plan)
  • Emergency numbers: 112; police 997, ambulance 999, fire 998; mountain and sea rescue 985
  • Embassies: in Warsaw, with consulates in Kraków, Gdańsk and other cities

The eastern border

Poland borders Ukraine, which is now part of the EU roaming area, but also Belarus and the Russian region of Kaliningrad, which are not. In the north-east, around the Masurian Lakes and near the border crossings, a phone can pick up a network from across the border, and an EU plan may charge for it at non-EU rates. If you travel close to those borders, set your phone to a Polish network manually.

The Tatras: use your phone as a safety tool

The Tatra Mountains above Zakopane are Poland's most popular hiking area, and the weather changes fast. Mountain rescue in Poland recommends the Ratunek app, which sends your exact location to the rescue services when you call for help. Install it before the hike and keep your battery charged. Coverage on the main trails is reasonable, but it drops in deep valleys and on the Slovak side of the ridge, where your phone may switch to a Slovak network, which is also inside EU roaming.

Cities, trains and payments

Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław and Gdańsk have strong coverage, and trains between them sell tickets through the PKP Intercity app. Cards are accepted almost everywhere; Poles often pay with BLIK codes from their banking apps, but as a visitor a contactless card or phone wallet is enough.

Getting connected

From the EU: your plan covers Poland under Roam Like at Home. A travel eSIM still helps if your tariff includes little data abroad or you are heading close to the Belarus or Kaliningrad borders.

From outside the EU: install a travel eSIM before departure. It starts its validity at the first connection in Poland, your own number keeps receiving texts, and WhatsApp, maps and ticket apps run on its data.

A Polish prepaid SIM must be registered with your passport when you buy it.

Consular protection: who to call in Poland

  • 112 is the general emergency number.
  • 997 reaches the police, 999 an ambulance and 998 the fire service.
  • 985 is for rescue in the mountains and at sea; 984 for rescue on lakes and rivers.
  • Embassies are in Warsaw and many countries have consulates in Kraków and Gdańsk. The Telcomia app shows yours, with address and phone.
  • Emergency phrases in Polish are ready to show on screen in the app.
