Internet in Qatar: Doha, the Desert and Calling Home (2026)

Qatar is outside EU roaming. How to stay online in Doha and on desert trips, which calling apps may be restricted, which local rules to respect, and who to call.

Telcomia·

Most visits to Qatar centre on Doha: the Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif, the towers of West Bay and the beaches, often during a stopover between Europe and Asia. Coverage is excellent across the city and its suburbs. Because Qatar is outside the EU's Roam Like at Home area, a European SIM normally pays a daily roaming charge there.

Key facts for Qatar

  • EU roaming: not covered by Roam Like at Home
  • Local networks: Ooredoo, Vodafone (depending on the plan)
  • Emergency numbers: 999
  • Embassies: in Doha

Regional tensions

Since July 2026, Iran has carried out strikes and retaliatory attacks at several locations across the region, and further escalation cannot be ruled out. Flights from Hamad International can be cancelled and the airspace closed at short notice, so follow your airline's updates closely, especially on a stopover. If the authorities issue a shelter alert, move inside a solid building and away from windows; the main danger is debris falling after interceptions, and fragments should never be touched.

Calling home

Messages and voice notes on WhatsApp and similar apps work normally, but voice and video calls through some apps may be restricted in Qatar. Test the app you plan to use when you arrive, and keep a second way to reach home, such as an ordinary phone call from your own number.

Stopovers and getting around

Many nationalities, including most Europeans, can enter Qatar without a visa for short stays, so a long layover is enough for a quick visit to the souq. The Doha Metro links Hamad International Airport with the city centre, West Bay and Lusail, and Uber and Karwa taxis are easy to book by app.

Desert trips and the Inland Sea

Trips to Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea on the border with Saudi Arabia, cross high dunes where the signal can disappear, and near the border your phone may pick up a Saudi network. Go with a licensed operator, travel in a convoy and carry water. In summer, temperatures often pass 40 °C, so plan outdoor visits for the early morning or the evening.

Local rules

Qatar is conservative in public: dress modestly in malls, souqs and government buildings, avoid public displays of affection, and do not photograph people, especially women, without their permission. Alcohol is served only in licensed hotel bars and restaurants.

Paying

Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere, including in the larger shops of Souq Waqif, although small stalls may prefer cash in riyals.

Getting connected

A travel eSIM goes on your phone before you fly, which is handy on a short stopover. It starts on its first connection in Qatar, while your own number still receives texts and bank codes.

Qatari prepaid SIMs from Ooredoo or Vodafone are sold at Hamad International Airport and in malls, and you need your passport to buy one.

Consular protection: who to call in Qatar

  • Dial 999 for the police, an ambulance or the fire brigade.
  • Embassies are in Doha, many of them in the diplomatic area of West Bay, and the Telcomia app lists yours with its address and phone number.
  • EU citizens whose country has no embassy or consulate in Qatar can ask any other EU country's embassy for help, and it must treat them like its own nationals (Article 23 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU).
  • Emergency phrases in Arabic are in the app, with audio, so you can show or play them when words fail.
