Internet in Slovakia: Bratislava, the Tatras and Mountain Rescue (2026)

Slovakia is inside EU roaming, and so are all its neighbours. How to stay online in Bratislava and the Tatras, and why mountain rescue insurance matters here.

Telcomia·

Slovakia is often a short add-on to Vienna or Budapest, but its mountains deserve more time: the High Tatras, the Low Tatras, the ladders and gorges of Slovak Paradise, and castles such as Spiš. With an EU SIM, Slovakia is covered by Roam Like at Home, and since January 2026 so is every one of its neighbours, Ukraine included. Travellers from outside the EU, for example from the United Kingdom or the United States, normally pay a daily roaming charge.

Key facts for Slovakia

  • EU roaming: covered by Roam Like at Home
  • Local networks: O2, Orange, Telekom (depending on the plan)
  • Emergency numbers: 112; police 158, ambulance 155, fire 150; mountain rescue 18 300
  • Embassies: in Bratislava

Bratislava and Vienna

Bratislava is under an hour from Vienna airport by bus or train, and many visitors arrive that way. Austria and Slovakia are both in the EU, so EU plans work on both sides, but a travel plan for Slovakia alone does not cover Austria; for a trip that includes Vienna, a regional Europe plan covers both.

The Tatras: insurance and 18 300

In the mountains, the cost of a rescue is charged to the person rescued unless their insurance covers it, and ordinary travel insurance often does not include mountain rescue. Buy specific cover before you hike. The mountain rescue service answers on 18 300, and if that call fails, 112 can reach it. Coverage is good in the resorts and patchy on high trails, and many high-altitude routes close for several months each year, so check which trails are open before setting off.

Trains to the mountains and Slovak Paradise

Trains link Bratislava with Poprad, the gateway to the High Tatras, in about four hours, and the Tatra Electric Railway connects the mountain resorts; tickets are sold in the app of ZSSK, the national railway. In Slovak Paradise, the gorge trails climb with ladders and chains and are one-way, and the signal drops between the rock walls, so download the route before you start.

The motorway vignette

Slovak motorways require an electronic vignette linked to your number plate, bought on the official eznamka.sk website or at petrol stations. Unofficial resale websites charge extra for the same thing.

Getting connected

EU SIM: nothing changes compared with home. A travel eSIM only makes sense if your tariff includes little data abroad.

Non-EU SIM: add a travel eSIM before your trip. It is installed from a QR code, begins its validity when it connects in Slovakia, and keeps your usual number available for texts and bank codes.

Slovak prepaid SIMs are sold in operator shops and at newsagents.

Consular protection: who to call in Slovakia

  • 112 works for every emergency; 158 is the police, 155 an ambulance and 150 the fire service.
  • 18 300 is the mountain rescue service.
  • Embassies are in Bratislava. The Telcomia app shows yours, with address and phone.
  • Emergency phrases in Slovak are ready to show on screen in the app.
