Internet in Slovenia: Ljubljana, Bled and the Julian Alps (2026)

Slovenia is inside EU roaming. How to stay online in Ljubljana, at Lake Bled and in the Julian Alps, what the e-vignette is, and who to call in the mountains.

Telcomia·

Slovenia is small: Lake Bled, the Postojna caves and the coast at Piran are all within about an hour and a half of Ljubljana, so many visitors base themselves in the capital and take day trips, or combine Slovenia with Croatia, Italy or Austria. For EU SIM cards, Slovenia is covered by Roam Like at Home, and visitors with a SIM from outside the EU usually pay roaming by the day.

Key facts for Slovenia

  • EU roaming: covered by Roam Like at Home
  • Local networks: Telekom Slovenije, Telemach, A1 (depending on the plan)
  • Emergency numbers: 112; police 113
  • Embassies: in Ljubljana

Ljubljana

Ljubljana's old town is largely closed to cars and easy to explore on foot, and coverage is strong throughout the city. City buses accept Visa and Mastercard contactless cards for a single fare; if you need to change buses within 90 minutes, the Urbana card or app covers both rides for one price.

Lake Bled, Bohinj and the Julian Alps

Coverage is good around Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj and in the valley villages, but it fades on the high trails of Triglav National Park. The road over the Vršič Pass, with 50 hairpin bends, closes in winter, and in summer afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains. Download maps, set off early and turn back when the weather changes; in an emergency, 112 also sends mountain rescue.

The Soča valley and the caves

In the Soča valley, rafting and canyoning trips start from Bovec and Kobarid, where the signal is good in town but patchy in the gorges. Underground, at Postojna or the Škocjan Caves, there is no signal at all, so agree on a meeting point before the tour starts.

Piran and the coast

Slovenia's short stretch of coast centres on Piran, a Venetian-style old town where cars must stay in the car park at the edge of town and a shuttle bus runs to the centre. Near the borders with Italy and Croatia, phones can connect to an Italian or Croatian network: with an EU SIM that changes nothing, but with a Slovenia-only plan, select a Slovenian network manually.

Driving: the e-vignette

Motorways and expressways require an e-vignette, bought online before you drive onto them. It is linked to your number plate, so there is no sticker to display. The Karavanke Tunnel to Austria charges its own toll on top.

Getting connected

With an EU SIM: Slovenia counts as home, so your usual allowance applies. A travel eSIM only helps if your tariff includes little data in the EU.

From outside the EU: install a travel eSIM before you fly. It starts on its first connection in Slovenia, and your usual number keeps receiving calls and bank codes. For a trip that also takes in Italy, Croatia or Austria, a Europe plan covers all four countries.

Slovenian prepaid SIMs are sold in phone shops, kiosks and petrol stations.

Consular protection: who to call in Slovenia

  • 112 for an ambulance, the fire service or mountain rescue, and 113 for the police.
  • Embassies are in Ljubljana. The Telcomia app shows yours, with address and phone.
  • The app has emergency phrases in Slovenian, ready to show on screen.

Questions travellers ask about Slovenia

Does my EU plan work in Slovenia?

Yes. Slovenia is part of Roam Like at Home, so your plan works as it does at home.

Do I need a vignette?

Yes, for motorways and expressways. Buy the e-vignette online before you drive onto them.

Which networks does a Telcomia eSIM use in Slovenia?

Telekom Slovenije and Telemach on most plans, and A1 on some, with 4G and 5G where available.

Who do I call for mountain rescue?

112, which sends mountain rescue teams as well as ambulances.

The short version

From the EU, your plan works as at home; from outside, install the eSIM before you fly. Buy the e-vignette before the motorway, start mountain hikes early, and save 112 and 113.
