Internet in the Isle of Man: Douglas, the TT and Heritage Railways (2026)

The Isle of Man is outside EU roaming, and UK SIMs roam there too. The ETA, TT race fortnight, Manx money, healthcare and who to call.

Telcomia·

The Isle of Man lies in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland, with Douglas as its capital, and calls itself the world's first entire UNESCO Biosphere nation. It is a British Crown Dependency, outside both the UK and the EU, so it is not covered by Roam Like at Home. Visit Isle of Man points out that the island does not benefit from EU roaming price caps, and that its two mobile networks, Manx Telecom and Sure, have their own agreements with networks abroad, so roaming charges depend entirely on your operator.

Key facts for the Isle of Man

  • EU roaming: not covered by Roam Like at Home
  • Local networks: Sure (depending on the plan)
  • Emergency numbers: 999 for the police, the fire service or an ambulance
  • Embassies: none on the island; embassies in London cover the Isle of Man, and France, Malta, Norway and Poland have honorary consuls there

Getting in: ID, the ETA and the Common Travel Area

Travel between the Isle of Man and the UK counts as a domestic journey, with no routine immigration control, but carry photo ID, because carriers set their own rules and some airlines now ask for a passport even within the Common Travel Area. Most travellers from Europe and further afield clear passport control in the UK or Ireland first. Since 23 April 2026, some passengers coming directly from outside the Common Travel Area need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): non-visa nationals visiting for up to six months must have one, while British and Irish citizens are exempt. ETAs issued by the Isle of Man, the UK, Jersey and Guernsey are recognised by all four. Visa nationals need a visa that covers the Isle of Man before they travel.

TT fortnight

The TT motorcycle races are run on public roads over a fortnight, which in 2026 stretched from late May into early June, and race week brings its own bank holiday. Roads on the course close on a published timetable, so check closures before planning a drive. Spectators must follow the marshals, who have considerable legal powers, including removing or detaining people. For the whole TT period, the Mountain Road runs one way, from Ramsey Hairpin to Creg-ny-Baa. Book ferries and rooms early if your trip overlaps with it.

Manx money, stamps and parking

The island has its own currency, in the same denominations as sterling. UK money is legal tender, but Manx notes are not accepted in the UK, although UK banks will exchange them. Cash machines in the main towns dispense Manx notes, except those at the Sea Terminal and the airport, which give English ones. Posting a card home requires Manx stamps, sold at post offices across the island. In towns and villages, disc parking zones limit stays to 30 minutes, one hour or two hours, and visitors must display a parking disc, available from car hire firms, the Sea Terminal, police stations and post offices. The police, easy to spot in their white helmets, answer 999 calls.

Steam, electric and horse power

The heritage railways are a highlight in their own right: a Victorian steam railway runs from Douglas to the south of the island, the Manx Electric Railway, more than 130 years old, follows the east coast, and the Snaefell Mountain Railway climbs from Laxey to a summit over 2,000 feet high. Along Douglas Promenade, horse trams run on what is described as the oldest horse-drawn tramway in the world. English is the everyday language, though you may hear Manx Gaelic, as in Failt Erriu, meaning welcome.

Healthcare: who pays

Under a reciprocal arrangement with the UK, residents of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland receive treatment that cannot wait until they get home, on the same basis as local people, with charges such as prescriptions still payable. Accident and emergency care is provided to everyone at no charge, at the 24-hour Emergency Department of Noble's Hospital outside Douglas, through the out-of-hours doctor service and at the Minor Injuries Unit in Ramsey, open from 8am to 8pm. Visitors from elsewhere pay for everything else, including hospital admission after A&E, medicines and tests, so comprehensive travel insurance is essential, and the arrangement does not always include repatriation even for UK residents.

Getting connected

A travel eSIM set up before you sail or fly connects as soon as you arrive. An Isle of Man plan runs on Sure, with 5G where available; a Europe plan covers the island together with the UK and Ireland, which suits a trip that continues to either, and a Europe Extended plan, a Mediterranean plan or a World plan include it too. Keep your usual SIM for bank texts, with data roaming switched off.

With a UK SIM: the island is outside the UK, so check what your tariff charges there before you go.

Consular protection: who to call in the Isle of Man

  • Dial 999 for the police, the fire service or an ambulance.
  • The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency, so British visitors deal directly with the island's police and health services rather than with a consulate.
  • Other nationalities are covered by their embassies in London. France, Malta, Norway and Poland have honorary consuls on the island, and Belgium and Germany cover it through honorary consuls based in north-west England.
  • Look up in the Telcomia app the embassy or consulate responsible for the Isle of Man for your nationality, and keep its number to hand.
  • If your EU country has no representation covering the island, the embassy or consulate of any other EU country must help you on the same terms as its own nationals (Article 23 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU).
  • English is the main language, alongside Manx Gaelic.
