Internet in Turkey: Buy Your eSIM Before You Land (2026)

Turkey is outside EU roaming and blocks some foreign eSIM shops inside the country. How to arrive connected in Istanbul, Cappadocia and Antalya.

Telcomia·

Turkey has two rules that surprise travellers. The first is familiar: the country is not part of the EU's Roam Like at Home area, so an EU plan can charge roaming the moment you land at Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen. The second is local: since July 2025 the national telecom regulator has blocked several foreign eSIM shops from inside Turkey, which means trying to buy data after arrival can leave you staring at a page that will not load.

The fix for both is the same, and it takes five minutes at home.

Key facts for Turkey

  • EU roaming: not covered by Roam Like at Home; some operators include Turkey voluntarily
  • Local networks: Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom (depending on the plan)
  • Emergency numbers: 112 for all emergencies (911 also connects to it)
  • Embassies: in Ankara; many consulates in Istanbul

Buy and install before you fly

Set up your connection before departure: buy the eSIM at home, install it with the QR code, and leave it switched off until you arrive. The plan's validity only starts when it first connects in Turkey, so there is no reason to wait, and you avoid depending on websites that may not open once you are inside the country.

A travel eSIM is a data line. Your usual number stays active for texts, WhatsApp calls work over data, and you can share the connection with a laptop, which helps on long bus rides between cities.

The 120-day rule for phones

Turkey registers phones by their IMEI number. A foreign phone can use Turkish networks for up to 120 days without registration; after that it has to be registered, with a fee, or it is blocked from the local networks. For a holiday this changes nothing. For long stays, digital nomads and students, it is worth knowing before you arrive.

Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast

In Istanbul you will lean on data constantly: ferry and metro times, BiTaksi or Uber to call a licensed taxi, and maps through neighbourhoods where streets change names every few hundred metres. In Cappadocia, balloon flights start before dawn and pick-ups are confirmed by message, so make sure your phone is working the night before. Along the Antalya and Aegean coasts, towns and resorts are well covered; mountain roads and remote bays less so.

Local SIM or Wi-Fi?

Tourist SIM cards from Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom are sold at the main airports and in operator shops, with registration against your passport. They include a Turkish number, which is useful for calling restaurants or tour operators. Hotel and café Wi-Fi is widespread, but public networks often ask for a Turkish phone number to log in.

Consular protection: safety in Turkey

  • 112 is the single number for police, ambulance and fire; 911 also connects to it.
  • Turkey sits in an active earthquake zone. Save your embassy's details and agree a meeting point with the people you travel with.
  • Embassies are in Ankara and many countries have consulates in Istanbul. The Telcomia app shows yours, with address and phone.
  • If you are an EU citizen and your country has no embassy or consulate in Turkey, the embassy of any other EU country must help you on the same terms as its own nationals (Article 23 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU).
  • Emergency phrases in Turkish are ready to show on screen in the app.
