You're packed. Passport ready. Boarding pass saved. But have you sorted your mobile data?
The difference between a smooth arrival and a stressful one often comes down to whether your phone works when you land. Here's the checklist.
1. Check if your phone supports eSIM
Settings → Cellular → look for "Add eSIM." If it's there, you're set. If not, check our compatible phones list.
2. Make sure your phone is unlocked
Some carrier-locked phones block eSIM. If you bought your phone through a carrier contract, call them and ask if eSIM is enabled.
3. Buy your eSIM data plan
Do this 24-48 hours before your flight. Not at the airport gate while boarding is announced. Browse plans for your destination, pick one, pay, and you'll receive a QR code by email.
4. Install the eSIM on WiFi
At home, on your stable WiFi. Scan the QR code, follow the prompts. The entire process takes 2 minutes. See our step-by-step guide.
5. Label it clearly
When your phone asks you to name the new line, call it something obvious: "Japan Data" or "Europe Trip." Future you will appreciate it.
6. Set the eSIM as your data line
Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → select your new eSIM. Keep your home SIM as the default for calls and messages.
7. Enable data roaming for the eSIM
This is the step most people forget. Settings → Cellular → tap your eSIM line → turn ON "Data Roaming." Without this, the eSIM won't connect to local networks.
8. Disable data roaming on your HOME SIM
You don't want your expensive home plan kicking in. Settings → Cellular → tap your home SIM → turn OFF "Data Roaming."
9. Download offline maps
Belt and suspenders. Open Google Maps → search your destination → tap "Download" for offline use. Do this for every city you're visiting.
10. Test it (if possible)
Some eSIMs activate immediately upon installation. If yours shows signal bars at home, great — it's working. If not, don't worry; most travel eSIMs activate when they detect a local network at your destination.
Bonus: screenshot your QR code
If something goes wrong and you need to reinstall, having a screenshot of the QR code saved to your photos is a lifesaver. Some eSIMs can only be installed once from the original QR, but it's good to have the backup.
